TAIERI DRAMATIC SOCIETY
We are an enthusiastic group of theatre practitioners who provide live entertainment for the local community and beyond.
The Society owns the "Fire Station Theatre" in Mosgiel. This has an seventy seat auditorium, a costume wardrobe, lighting and sound systems. The foyer was refurbished in recent years and provides a pleasant space with a bar/kitchen and up to date washrooms with wheelchair access. Heat pumps were installed in 2008 making the theatre very cosy on cold evenings. New seating has also been purchased. These improvements provide a warm and comfortable experience for theatre goers. We have a new lighting and sound system which was recently installed.
The Fire Station Theatre is the venue for a number of productions each year. These take the form of full length plays, one-act plays, sketches and variety shows. On occasions some productions have been taken to other centres. Recently additional use has been made of the theatre by hosting shows promoted by Arts on Tour NZ (AOTNZ).
Celebrating 65 years - 1948 to 2013
For most productions open auditions are held which means that anyone can be considered for a part in a show. We are very keen to encourage anyone who has a love of theatre to become involved in some way. As well as being on stage there are opportunities to be involved with such things as lighting, sound, props, set design construction and décor, front of house, administration and publicity. The management committee can always use more skills too.
For live theatre to flourish, particularly in an environment of electronic entertainment, in all its various forms, we need people to support us in many ways. If being actively involved is not for you then being part of the audience is equally vital.
The Taieri Dramatic Society has been successful for over sixty years in providing a vehicle for those with a desire to be part of living theatre, good inexpensive entertainment and a friendly, active group to share your interests. Long may it continue!
